First examination passed

SECOND DAY - WE'RE GOOD TO GO. Today we started early in the morning with a general medical exam: blood tests, RMN and ECG. With this occasion we were able to see how the rest of the hospital looks like. Very much like in Romania. That says it all.

By the end of the day one of the doctors comes to see us with the results. Gruia has passed all the examinations and has received clearance for the stem cell treatment. His first IV injection is scheduled for next Tuesday. Until then we can profit as much as we can from the city. Provided that the unforgiving heat, which takes your breath away the minute you leave the hospital, is not a deterrent.

And is not. We go first to the bank to change money into Renminbi (the Chinese currency) and then to the biggest supermarket in the area: Beiguo. By any standards is really huge. You can find almost anything in there, from cooking pots (we need one) to knifes (yes, it's kind of an arms' race for us), and to food products. You can also find imported products from Europe. Our salvation comes from a stand with Italian pasta and tomato sauce. Unfortunately we cannot come anyway near a piece of cheese.

Of course, everywhere we go we are an attraction point for the locals, who nonetheless are very polite and always smiling. I'm trying to practice my poor Chinese as much as I can, but usually I end up by using my hands in funny gestures...

One more word about the traffic in the city. You have to be here and see to believe it: there are armies of bicycles, motorcycles and cars coming from all directions one could think of. And that's not all: they don't follow any traffic rule. The crossroads are particularly interesting to see. I've seen taxis passing across the intersection on red light, making their way through a group of Chinese on bicycles...it's really overwhelming ...and risky for foreigners like us.
