Exploring the city

EXPLORING THE CITY - yesterday we took our time to visit new parts of Shijiazhuang. Because we had one more day to wait for the second injection (which will be spinal), and because the doctors said that after the injection Gruia should not leave the hospital for 2 days, we decided it's better to go out now. As a large city, Shijiazhuang has many interesting spots to see. But we still need a few items for our stay here, so we headed for the stores. A drive with the taxi is very convenient and cheap. And - considering the heat outside - is the only means of transportation with air conditioning.

Actually there is another way - for the curious tourists and the intrepid locals. It's kind of a ricsa-motorcycle, with enough room in the back to take 3 people on board. Because it has no doors or windows it's pretty drafty and gives you that wonderful cooling feeling. But it's also kind of noisy and rigid, and you will definitely feel all the bumps and holes in the road.

So we went to an area with stores. On the cards we have received from our Beike agents to help us "communicate" with taxi drivers, it says it is a "curiosity shop". In reality there's a whole block of stores, most of them on 4 or 5 levels, putting on show all sorts of merchandise, from jade accessories to underwear...

After doing some necessity shopping, we took a ricsa-motorcycle to the nearest Pizza Hot. For some reason Gruia didn't like the ride and asked to get off. In the Pizza Hut restaurant was nice and cool (air conditioning at its best again). The food was not that great though. As many other western restaurant formulas, once in China Pizza Hut changed its recipes to accommodate the tastes of its Chinese customers. Perhaps this is why Pizza Hut is so popular here. The restaurant was full packed with clients. Which for us was somehow surprising, because the prices are really exclusive. Compared to a Pizza Hut in Romania, the prices here are 2 or 3 times higher, considering the size of what you actually get for the money you pay. And it's certainly 3 or 4 times more than what you will pay in a good Chinese restaurant.

We won't visit Pizza Hut any time soon, that's for sure. For 2 soups and 2 small pizzas, one minuscule potato salad and a plate of grilled pork ribs we paid 249 Renminbi, which is around 33 US dollars. So the food remains a problem for us...
